‘FOREIGN, INTIMATE’ is the fifth release from New North, a concert series for exploratory music based in Narrm/Melbourne. It documents three captivating performance from New North's concert at Brunswick Mechanics Institute on April 27th, 2022.

FLORA CARBO & EITAN RITZ

Naarm based saxophonist Flora Carbo and electronic musician Eitan Ritz presented a new work exploring feedback loops created by live processing. This intimate duo blurs the lines between acoustic, amplified and improvised sound, locating the physical in sound production. Live projections created by Eitan magnified and abstracted the performance, creating new feedback loops - sound influencing visuals and visuals influencing sound.

JOE TALIA

Joe Talia creates detail rich sound worlds of gliding tones, skittering percussion and burbling location atmospherics. Joe presented a new solo work for drum kit and electronics, bringing studio composition and electroacoustic practice into a live acoustic drum context where multi layered textures and tones become rhythm, and pulses disintegrate into spectral bursts.

MAHAGONNY

Mahagonny is an international interdisciplinary project that revels in the innate poetry and theatre of experimental performance. They presented a multisensory, multi-location collaboration between artists in Naarm/Melbourne, Boorloo/Perth, and Berlin that combined striking visuals by artist Lena Czerniawska framed by complex improvised sound worlds by composer-performers Emilio Gordoa, Michael McNab & Josten Myburgh. Mahagonny's performance was presented in collaboration with Audible Edge Festival in Boorloo/Perth.
